What's a Good Reaction Time by Age?

The most defensible answer is not a single millisecond chart. Reaction time depends on the task, stimulus, device and testing protocol. Large studies do, however, show a clear age pattern: performance is generally fastest in early adulthood and becomes progressively slower across later decades.

What large studies found

A classic study of 5,325 participants found that average simple reaction time was best in people in their 20s and increased progressively into older age groups. The fastest single response changed much less than the average, suggesting that sustained attention and consistency matter as well as raw speed.

The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, using auditory tasks in 1,265 adults aged 17–96, also found progressive slowing with age. Complex reaction tasks slowed more than simple ones. More recent large web-based cohorts, including MindCrowd with more than 75,000 participants, likewise show age-related variation in visual reaction time.

Why we do not publish a fake “normal by decade” table

A laboratory button press, an auditory vigilance task and a browser click are not interchangeable. Online results include display and input latency. A phone tap can differ from a desktop mouse, and even two monitors can add different delays. Copying numbers from one protocol into a universal age chart would create false precision.

For personal tracking, compare yourself against your own repeated baseline on the same setup. For population comparisons, use norms from the exact test you took. Human Benchmark, for example, reports a median of 273 ms across its own large public dataset, but that is a site-specific web benchmark rather than an age-adjusted clinical norm.

How to track your reaction time as you age

  1. Use the same reaction test and the same device.
  2. Record several trials and use an average or median.
  3. Note sleep, caffeine and unusual fatigue.
  4. Watch long-term trends rather than one unusually fast or slow attempt.
