  3. ONE shape or color has changed
  4. Click the cell that changed
  5. Complete 15 rounds to finish

About Pattern Recognition

Pattern Recognition tests your visual working memory and change detection ability. You'll see a grid of shapes and colors for a brief period, then after a short pause, the grid reappears with one change. Your task is to identify what changed - either a shape transformation or a color swap. This challenges your visual encoding, retention, and comparison abilities - critical skills for learning, problem-solving, and attention to detail.

Game Features

3 Difficulty Levels
Increasing grid sizes and shorter memory windows
Two Change Types
Detect shape changes or color swaps
Memory Analysis
Detailed stats on visual working memory performance

Scoring System

Correct Detection
100 pts
Speed Bonus
Up to +100
Perfect Round
+50 pts
Wrong Answer
-50 pts
Maximum Per Round:
  • Fast correct detection = 200 points (base + speed bonus)
  • Perfect accuracy in a round = +50 bonus points
  • Wrong detection = -50 points (penalty)

Speed bonus rewards rapid visual comparison. The faster you detect the change, the higher your bonus. Perfect rounds (all correct) earn additional points.

Training Benefits

Visual Working Memory
Hold and manipulate visual information in short-term memory
Change Detection
Rapidly identify differences between visual patterns
Attention to Detail
Notice subtle visual differences and anomalies
Visual Encoding
Efficiently encode visual information into memory
Pattern Recognition
Identify and remember visual patterns and structures
Visual Comparison
Compare current visual input with memory representations

Performance Tips

  • 1
Scan the grid systematically - top to bottom or left to right
  • 2
Focus on both shape and color - changes can be either type
  • 3
Create a mental image during the memorization phase
  • 4
Compare position by position when the grid reappears
  • 5
Trust your first instinct - overthinking can lead to errors

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1
What is pattern recognition?
Pattern recognition is the cognitive ability to identify regularities, structures, and changes in visual information. It involves encoding patterns into memory, storing them, and comparing new input against stored patterns - a fundamental skill for learning and problem-solving.
Q2
What types of changes should I look for?
There are two types of changes: SHAPE changes (circle → square, triangle → circle, etc.) and COLOR changes (red → blue, blue → yellow, etc.). Only one cell changes per round, but it could be either a shape change or a color change.
Q3
How do difficulty levels differ?
Easy: 3×3 grid (9 cells), 3s memorization, 10 rounds. Medium: 4×4 grid (16 cells), 2s memorization, 15 rounds. Hard: 5×5 grid (25 cells), 1.5s memorization, 20 rounds. Higher difficulties increase memory load and reduce encoding time.
Q4
What is visual working memory?
Visual working memory is your brain's ability to temporarily hold and manipulate visual information. It has a limited capacity (typically 3-4 objects) and duration (seconds). This game trains you to maximize this capacity through efficient encoding strategies.
Q5
How can I improve my performance?
Practice systematic scanning strategies instead of random looking. Try grouping items by color or shape. Use verbal labels ("red circle top-left") to reinforce memory. With practice, your visual working memory capacity and encoding speed will improve.
